Mrs. Hazel Kitchen

November 22, 1922 — November 19, 2012

Hazel L. (Sohmer) Kitchen of Clarkston formerly of Millington passed away early Monday morning November 19, 2012 while at the Autumn Ridge Assisted Living in Clarkston, MI, Hazel was 89.

Hazel was born November 22, 1922 in Otter Lake Michigan, and was the daughter of Joseph & Mildred (Pettit) Sohmer. On June 16, 1951 Hazel married her husband or 33 years Joseph (Joe) Kitchen, Joe precedes her in death in June of 1984. After high school Hazel attended Lapeer County Normal, but when the war broke out Hazel left college and went to work for General Motors in the AC- Spark Plug Division. After the war Hazel resumed her college education attending colleges to achieve her different levels as a certified teacher; she attended Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Michigan State, and in 1965 finishing her college education with a Masters from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor MI. In the beginning of her teaching career Hazel taught in small one room schools teaching grades K-8th grades. Hazel also taught school for Columbiaville, Bentley, Mt. Morris, Saginaw Public Schools, and finished her 35 year career with the Lakeville Public Schools teaching first grade, and of the grades Hazel taught over her 35 years of teaching she loved teaching the first grade. Hazel began her teaching career in 1946, and retired from the Lakeville Public Schools in 1981.

Hazel leaves her family three son and daughters in-law; Dean & Diane Kitchen, Roger & Kathy Kitchen, and Greg & Jeanne Kitchen, five grandchildren, Jae, Jennie, Allison, Candace, and Peter & wife Carla Anderson, a great granddaughter Hope. Besides her husband Hazel is preceded in death by her siblings.

Service Information

Funeral services were held Saturday Nov.-24-2012 at the Hanlin Funeral Home. The burial to followed at the Smith Hill Cemetery in Otisville Michigan.
