Mrs. Viola Cobb

Mrs. Viola M. (McGirr) Cobb of Millington, Michigan passed away Sunday May 8, 2016 at her Millington residence. Viola was 89.

Viola was born on November 28, 1926, in Spratt, Michigan and was the daughter of the late Albert and Phoebe (King) McGirr. Viola’s passion in life was teaching. As a young teacher Viola started her career teaching in small country schools in Alpena, Michigan. In the early 1950’s she moved to the Saginaw area and began teaching in the Saginaw school system. On August 11, 1954 Viola married Carvel Cobb. Together she and Carvel settled in Millington where Viola raised her family and became a teacher in the Millington school system. Over her 38-year career there, she taught 6th grade, 4th grade and 3rd grade. In her 80’s, Viola worked to organize the Tuscola County Pheasant Habitat Restoration Initiative. She was also a longtime member of the Millington United Methodist Church, where she was responsible for an artistic representation on her monthly bulletin board. She was also member of the local Sweet Adelines chorus.

Viola leaves her family to cherish her memory. She is survived by her children: Lee (and Karen) Cobb, Kurt (and Pauline) Cobb, and Gwen (and Raymond) Williams. She leaves also her grandchildren: Kristin (and Ryan) Suhi, Michael Cobb, Chelsey Cobb, Tyler Cobb, Rhian Williams, and a great-granddaughter, Sophie Suhi. Viola leaves also nieces, nephews and other much-loved extended family. In addition to her parents, Viola is preceded in death by her husband Carvel in 1983, and her eight siblings: Ellen, Alice, C. Emery, Eula, June, Orville, Lloyd, and her most beloved twin sister Iola.

The Cobb family will receive friends at the Hanlin Funeral Home in Millington, MI on Saturday, May 14, 2016 from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm, and also at the church on Sunday, May 15 from 1:00 pm until the services begin at 2:00. Prior to the services at the church on Sunday there will be a brief time of visitation, remembrance and refreshment in the fellowship hall (starting at 1:00). Funeral services will be held at the Millington United Methodist Church (9020 S. State Rd.) on Sunday May 15, 2016 beginning at 2:00 pm. The burial will follow on Monday morning May 16, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Millington Twp. Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that you consider the Millington United Methodist Church, or the Millington-Arbela Township District Library for memorial gifts of remembrance
