Norman R. Kern

April 8, 1937 — June 25, 2025

Vassar

Mr. Norman Russell "Norm" Kern, age 88, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Norm was born in Genesee County, Michigan, on April 8, 1937, a son of Wesley & Ernestine Kern (Smith). He moved to Vassar when he was a child and attended the country school. On July 20, 1957, Norm wed the love-of-his-life, Barbara Kralik. Together they raised their children, shared countless memories, and celebrated 66 years of marriage before Barb's passing on June 24, 2024.

Before retirement, Norm worked as a team leader in the Buick Foundry. Afterwards, he worked alongside his son in Kern Excavating for 10 years. He was a member of the Vassar Eagles and former member of the Thumb Area Mud Runners. Norm enjoyed riding horses, cooking and feeding others, woodcrafting, camping, and demolition derbies. Norm was a gifted storyteller and would entertain family and friends for hours on end. Above all, Norm loved his family and was a devoted grandfather. He never missed an event, game, or recital and was their biggest fan. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and love him.

Norm is forever loved by his daughter, Debra (Ted) Colosky; daughter-in-law, Carol Kern; grandchildren: Jeremy (Morgan) Kern, Carrie Kern, Jeff (Kelly) Colosky, Jason (Jennifer) Colosky; great-grandchildren: Caleb, Zoey, Cheyenne, Sara, Landon, Wyatt, and Sawyer; great-great-grandchildren, Everlee, and one-on-the-way; in-laws, Carl & Maureen Kralik; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Kern; son, Randy Kern; granddaughter, Carrie Colosky; four great-granchildren; and his parents, Wesley and Ernestine Kern.

Norm's family will receive guests at Hanlin Funeral Home - Millington from 3 - 7 p.m. on Monday, June 30, 2025. Funeral services will follow at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2025; additional visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Rev. Jim Mellish will officiate. Afterwards, Norm will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery, Vassar, alongside his wife, Barbara Kern.
