Harry Kern

Mr. Harry R. Kern of Millington. Michigan passed away early Sunday morning December 23, 2018, at the age of 90.

Harry was born in Frankenmuth, Michigan on May 11, 1928. He was the son of the late Ruben and Regina (Bernthal) Kern. On June 23, 1951 Harry married the love of his life Lucille Schleier.  Harry attended St. Lorenz Lutheran School in Frankenmuth, Michigan and then went on to Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw, Michigan. After High School Harry attended Central Michigan University to earn his Teaching Certificate, where he was also Captain and Most Valuable Player of the CMU baseball team. He graduated from Central Michigan University in 1953. Harry also played two years of minor league baseball. Harry taught at Millington High School for 37 years. There he was a Business and Typing Teacher, a baseball coach for 22 years with a 317-136 record, and was also the Athletic Director. In 1976 Harry won the Michigan Class B Baseball Coach of the year. He was inducted into the Frankenmuth Baseball/Softball Hall of Fame. Harry was also honored by the Tuscola County Meet of Champions with a Sports Leader Award. He was a member of the Michigan Sports Sages. Harry was also on the Village of Millington Zoning Board and Arthur Latham Park Board. Harry was a charter member of the Millington Lions Club for 53 years, he was honored with the Melvin Jones Fellowship. Harry was a long time member at St. Paul Lutheran Church were he served the church in several elected positions. Harry was also Millington's Most Honored Citizen in 2000.

Harry leaves his family to cherish his memory. His three Sons and Daughter-In-Laws; Steven and Mary Kern, David and Rhonda Kern, and Michael Kern. His grandchildren and their spouses; Andrea and Nick Cassidy , Erin and Josh Biggart, Katy and Nick Pennington, Alex Kern, Timothy Kern and Fiancé Hannah, and Nathaniel and Kate Kern. Harry also leaves his brother; Franklin and Sister-In-Law Loretta Kern and his sister; Jeanette Elbers. Harry also leaves 12 great-great grandchildren.

Harry is preceded in death by his wife Lucille; Parents Ruben and Regina Kern; Father-In-Law and Mother-In-Law Herbert and Clara Schleier; Brother James W. Kern; Sister-In-Law Vera, and Brother-In-Law Charles Elbers.

The Kern family will receive friends at the Hanlin Funeral Home in Millington, MI on Thursday December 27, 2018 from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm and on Friday from 10:00am until the service begins. Funeral services will be held Friday December 28, 2018 at 11:00 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Millington, MI, with burial to follow at the Millington Township Cemetery. Memorial Gifts of Remembrance can be directed to, St. Paul Lutheran Church Millington Building Fund, Millington Lions Club, or Concordia Seminary Fort Wayne Worship Anew TV program.
